Classroom Expectations

What are the classroom expectations in Kindergarten?

How will you know if your child is following the classroom rules?

Read below for all of the answers to these common questions.

The 5 Steps

JELV has a school wide disciplinary plan, called the 5 Steps. They are the expectations we have for our students in the classroom and throughout the school. We encourage you to use this language at home with your child for consistency purposes. It is a great program that is excellent for our young students!

The 5 Steps are:

1) Safe Hands and Safe Feet

2) Try Your Best

3) Express Yourself (use your words)

4) Play Nice With Others

5) Stop and Think (make good choices)

Here is a video of the 5 Steps Song we sing in class!

Warm & Fuzzy Jar

As a whole group reward system, we implement the “Warm and Fuzzy Jar” in our classroom management system. When the entire class is making good choices, it gives the teacher(s) “warm and fuzzy” feelings. When this occurs, a “warm and fuzzy” is added to the jar.

  • When the class fills the entire jar with “warm and fuzzies” they will receive a fun reward, such as a popsicle party, pajama day, U.K. Day, popcorn party, etc.

    • The students vote on what type of reward they would like to receive.

  • After celebrating, the jar is emptied and the class starts over with earning “warm and fuzzies”.

Whole Class Behaviors that earn “Warm and Fuzzies”:

  • Walking quietly in the hallway with magic pockets and bubbles

  • Following directions in the classroom without any reminders

  • Getting compliments from other teachers for good behavior

  • Following the rules in the bathroom

  • Following the rules during breakfast or lunch in the cafeteria

  • Following playground rules during recess

  • Having good behavior during special area classes

Our Clip Chart

In Kindergarten we use the clip chart method of discipline.

  • Each student has a clip with their name on it.

  • Every day the students start out with their clip on green, "Ready to Learn", and then depending on the choices they remain on green, with good choices or move their clip, down with poor choices or with exceptional choices students can move their clip beyond to blue and the highest purple (not pictured, above blue)!

  • Students recieve 3 warnings before moving their clip down one color. Therefore, to get to red, a student has received numerous warnings.

  • The only time a student will move their clip without any warnings would be if a student:

    • takes violent action on another child

    • bad language

    • purposefully making a decision that puts himself/herself or another student in danger

    • severe inappropriate bathroom behavior

    • disrespectful behavior

  • Students can move their clip up or down no matter what color they are on, even yellow, orange or red. This provides students with opportunities to fix their behavior and have a good day.

  • Their behavior will be recorded daily using colored markers and short notes (if necessary) on a corresponding behavior calendar located in their T.I.G.E.R Folder. Below you will find the color code for the behavior calendar. The only difference between our classroom colors and the code is that students on green will remain white on the calendar. We have so many students who remain on green, that it is difficult to color every child's folder at the end of the day. Therefore, we only color the calendar if your child, clipped up beyond green for an exellent day or if your child clipped down. If your child clipped down, Mrs. Candy & I will always write a short note why to dicuss the behavior with your child and how to have a better day/make better choices.

If your child's Calendar is this color, your child ended their day on:

  • Purple (your child will have a large sticker!)=Purple

  • Blue (Your child will be wearing a paper bracelet!)=Blue

  • White/Not Colored in= Green

  • Yellow (with note)= Yellow

  • Orange (with note)= Orange

  • Red (with note)= Red

Please initial your child's behavior calendar every evening and discuss with your child their day, good choices or poor choices.

  • Remember to celebrate student's sucesses!

  • All students who remain on green (or above- blue/purple) all week will choose a “treasure” (small toy, pencil, or eraser) out of our “treasure box” to take home on Friday(s).

  • Students who had to clip down any day during the week to yellow, orange and/or red, will not get to choose an item from the treasure chest. However, if they have a good day on Friday, they will be able to receive the daily reward of green (treat), blue (treat & bracelet) or purple (treat & sticker).

  • Celebrate if your child was able to get into the treasure chest! This is a BIG accomplishment!
